the government sent me a paper saying im going to get $678.00. when i filed my taxes this past feb my income was only $22,000 and i claimed myself as head of household with two dependants. one dependant is 5 and the other is my sister thats 24, but she had no income all year and was a student. i thought head of household got atleast $600 alone. so shouldnt i have got more for the dependants? i thought $300 additional for the dependants. so shouldnt i have got $1200?
just confused how they got that amount. my boyfriend got the same letter and he is getting $600 alone. he made double what i did in income last year. i actually paid more. i had them take out an additional $15 dollars state and $15 federal.. thats in addition to what they took out already. so i overpaid so i would get a higher check back at the end of the year. one of my dependants is under 17? my boyfriend made double what i did and got $600? doesnt make sence. he made around $40,000 for the year and got more then i did.. not fair lol.. i paid 1,035.04 in state taxes and 2,844.34 in federal |

you get nothing for your sister b/c she is too old 17 or older dependents doesn't qualify.you get 378.00 for you b/c you paid 378.00 in federal taxes and 300.00 for your 5 year old dependent = 678.00.
you get up to 600.00 not 600.00 flat out. if you paid 300.00 or less in taxes you get 300.00 if you pay 300.00 but less than 600.00 you get that amount you paid back, which in your case was 378.00. if you pay 600.00 or more you only get 600.00 back not what you paid. |

That answer doesn't make sense. If you made $22,000, you HAD to have paid more than $300 in taxes. She probaly paid that much in 2 months.

No, what you thought was wrong, you get at least $300 alone, and an additional $300 for each dependent child under age 17.
The $678 is correct. Your tax liability for 2007 was $378 (before they took off the child tax credit and gave you EIC) - so you get all of that back, plus $300 for your 5 year old child. If your boyfriend got $600 for just himself, that's because he paid $600 or more income tax. |
