A man I knew from a previous job was fired due to a personality conflict with his supervisor. He was let go on trumped up charges of misconduct so he is not eligible for unemployment. After two weeks he will be flat broke and in serious trouble. He has been looking all day for a good job but has struck out.
Those types of jobs common for a 50 year old professional are hard to get now days with the economy in such a bad shape. Jobs that pay very little are designed for the young or immigrant unskilled laborer, so he can not get those jobs either. He has tried all the temp agencies in town and struck out. Those jobs are designed informally for immigrants and women. What should he do? I can assure you it is nearly impossible for a fifty year old man who carries himself like an executive to get a low skill low paid jobs that one can start immediately. They assume you are overqualified and will quit almost immediately. |

If he is flat broke he needs a job, any job.
Every retail and fast food place will consider hiring someone his age. He just needs to keep his mouth shut about being fired and his "personality conflict" Just say he was let go. And there are always bars and the like he can try too. |

He needs to lower his standards.
Comments that entry-level jobs are for young people or immigrants or that temp jobs are for women or immigrants is showing that he is elitist. He doesn't want the job unless it meets his standards...when he just needs a job and can't afford to be picky. Temp agency jobs have often been a good way to find a new career. Eg, take the job being offered and do the best you can at it. Get noticed and then if a job is offered, take it. <<edit>> So dress down for the interview. It can be done. |
